A few years ago I was in a go-nowhere job and decided to go back to college. I had read all the self-help books – I was a personal growth junkie – was often told that I had all the potential in the world, and yet the gap between my supposed potential and the reality I was creating was as wide as the Grand Canyon!

Even though I had failed the pre-requisite exam, by some miracle I slipped through into graduate school.

On the first day of classes my heart sank when I realized that not only had the other students passed the pre-requisite exam, but most of them had also passed the highest-level exam beyond that! Over half of them already had master’s degrees in other disciplines, and they all worked at important university posts or other very important sounding careers.

It seemed that my getting into the program was some kind of mistake, and I was terrified that someone was going to find me out!

Despite enormous effort on my part, it didn’t get much better. In fact, it got a lot worse! I was beginning to feel like the source of all dumb blond jokes.
